The club meets once a week during lunch and is coached by a different language arts teacher at each grade level. Students that are in the club participate in a “mock bee” to help determine the team that will represent Matthew Henson Middle School during the county spelling bee.

The Black Saga Competition is an exciting learning program for students that complement social studies curricula by helping students reflect on the histories of people who settled in this country. The Black Saga Competition is sponsored by Coppin State University, Maryland Geographic Alliance, and the Maryland State Department of Education. The Black Saga Competition encourages students to learn about the African American experience, and provides an exciting forum for students to show how much they know about this important part of American history. Future Educators Association
What is it? “Future Educators Association is an international program for middle and high school students interested in exploring careers in education. The program is similar to the Future Teachers of American, an activity that existed prior to 1969 under the auspices of the NEA. The FEA program not only helps students explore careers in education, but it also provides service opportunities and offers schools and communities a chance to shape their own future by shaping the future of the education profession.” per:Http://www.pdkintl.org/fea/
What Local FEA Chapters Do “For students…FEA helps them to explore teaching as a career option, provides them with a realistic understanding of teaching, and encourages students from diverse backgrounds to think seriously about the teaching profession. For teachers…FEA offers them a chance to shape our nation’s future by shaping the future of the education profession. It also gives teachers opportunities to examine, clarify, and explain their role in students’ lives. For schools…FEA is a service opportunity that evaluates the role of teachers and offers new avenues of communication about education and its place in the community. Per: http://www.pdkintl.org/fea/
How to Apply? Our chapter has a membership drive during the first few weeks of school. Students applying for membership can pick up an application in the cafeteria during their lunch shift during the membership drive. Spaces are limited. Members must maintain C’s in all their classes and at least “satisfactory” citizenship marks. For more information, contact: http://www.pdkintl.org/fea/

News Club writes a student newspaper monthly from November through May. Student reporters are assigned to “beats” including World News, School News, Entertainment, Art, Featured People, Advise and Humor. They select their own topics to write about and spend club time writing on the computer. Often they have to do research and conduct interviews before they come to club meetings. News Club reporters show Pride, Spirit and Commitment by publishing they’re writing in the Henson Horizon Student Newspaper. News Club will meet from 3:30 to 4:30 PM on Fridays. Students in sixth grade can receive an application in Language Arts and Reading class. Seventh and eighth graders can pick up an application at lunch. As part of the application process, students must write articles to show what they would do in the club. Those selected will receive an invitation to attend the kick off meeting in October. If you have questions, contact Ms. Koch, the club sponsor, at kkoch@ccboe.com.
