Principals' Message

On behalf of the administration, faculty, students, and parents, it is a pleasure for me to welcome you to the Matthew Henson Middle School web site.  This site will be a continuous "work in progress", and we invite your comments and suggestions as to how we better serve you.  We hope that these pages provide you with valuable information and give you a snap shot of many of the activities occurring at our school.  Matthew Henson has a very dedicated and caring professional staff, a wonderfully diverse and motivated group of students, and a supportive community.  High expectations for behavior and personal responsibility are strictly adhered to so that each child may have the opportunity to learn within a safe and secure environment.

My philosophy centers on the student.  The middle school years are a special time in the early stages of adolescence.  Our students have a great variety of physical, social, emotional and academic needs which the school, the home, and the community must endeavor to meet.  It is essential to offer a well-balanced middle school program by emphasizing basic skills and by providing opportunities to explore new, enriching, and challenging areas.  The child is the focal point of all effort.  To develop his/her best intellectual, social and personal potential is my mission.
