Builders Club

Sponsors – Mrs. Heffentreyer, Mrs. Butkiewicz.

This is a service club affiliated with the Waldorf Kiwanis Club which will have projects benefiting the school and the community, such as Boxtops for Education, coat drives, book drives, etc.  The club will begin meeting in October.  Watch for further details

Environmental Club

Sponsor - Mrs. Zemlo

The Environmental Club meets once a month on Wednesdays to prepare for their “Lexus Eco Challenges”.  As a member of this club, the majority of the work will be group work (teams), done outside of school.   Students will decide on action plans with their teams and implement their ideas in order to help the environmental health of our school and community.  On Mondays and/or Thursdays members of the club will also be staying after to empty the blue recycle bins placed around the school.  Please contact Mrs. Zemlo at azemlo@ccboe.com with any questions. 

Golf Club

Sponsor - Mr.Barnes

Students meet twice a month.

Objective:  To teach students the history, knowledge and skills required to master the art of golf. 

We also stress the usage of proper golf etiquette. We want them  never to forget that any sport or club that they are involved in they must have a level of fun.   We hope that the commitment that each student make to this club will assist  him or her in the future.We gladly accept your support.

We meet every other Wednesday from 3:15-4:30. We also have meetings to go to and some extra field trips held on school days and occasionally Saturday's. We have fundraisers so that we can get some extra money and sometimes if we have more money we donate items to the school.

Ladies of Vision

Sponsor - Mrs. Thomas

Members are expected to continue to show positive behaviors and academic growth. Meetings are usually held during students' lunch period. Upcoming field trips and events will be communicated to parents via letter/meeting.

MathCounts

Sponsors - Mrs. Zemlo, Mrs. Francis

MathCounts is a competitive math club that meets on Mondays after school until 4:00 pm.  Competitions are once a month, beginning in November, and will be held on Thursdays from 4:00 to 5:00 pm at the Gwynn center, located in La Plata across from La Plata High School (transportation is NOT provided).  In March, there is a state wide competition where the top 4 'mathletes' at John Hanson will compete.  Please contact Mrs. Zemlo (azemlo@ccboe.com) or Mrs. Francis (tfrancis@ccboe.com) with any questions. 

MESA

Sponsor – Mr. IRWIN

Maryland MESA (Math, Engineering, Science and Achievement) is a program designed to help students who have a desire to pursue a career in Math, Engineering or Science.  We will spend the year learning scientific principles through hands-on labs, projects, experiments, and demonstrations.  The year culminates in a five part competition against the other Charles County middle schools.  We will be taking 2-3 field trips throughout the school year and they will be announced in the near future.  For a much more detailed description of the course, please go to http://www.jhuapl.edu/mesa/content.htm, which is the Maryland MESA website.

National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)

Sponsors - Ms. DeMarco-Logue and Mrs. Francis

This club is designed for students who have maintained a very high GPA from 6th grade through 8th grade.  Students will be expected to maintain a 3.4 GPA each quarter to remain eligible.  Students who do not maintain the required GPA will be put on academic probation until the next quarter to show their improvement.

Meetings are scheduled for the first Monday of each month.  The following days will be the scheduled meetings for this school year.  These meetings are subject to change and notification will be sent home if changes are required.

September 8, October 6, November 3, December 8, January 5, February 2, March 2, April 20, May 4 

  The meetings are from 3:15-4:00 pm. 

7th grade inductions will be conducted in the spring.

Newspaper

Sponsor – Ms. Vitanovec

Newspaper club is an opportunity for students to practice their writing skills.  Putting together a newspaper that everyone is going to read is a great experience for any level of writer.  Members write stories, poetry, news, as well as comics and activities.  The topics are endless.  Every member of the club has an experience that will last a lifetime.

Yearbook

Yearbook club is an opportunity for students to practice team work, organization, and meet deadlines.  Remembering the school year is exciting, actually taking part in capturing those moments is priceless.
