Identification
Charles County Public Schools will begin a new gifted
identification process in the spring of 2008.
Students in grades 2-7 will be screened for gifted services for the
2008-2009 school year. The process will
include:
- Broad-based Screening of Students
- Gifted Resource Teachers at each elementary and
middle school will review available achievement test scores for students
scoring at advanced levels.
- Ability test scores for students in grades 2 and
5 will be reviewed.
- Teachers may nominate students who display
gifted characteristics in the classroom.
- Parents may nominate students who display gifted
characteristics at home.
- These students will make up the screening pool.
- In-depth Assessment of Students in Screening
Pool
- A school-based identification committee will
review data on each student in the screening pool.
- Multiple criteria will be considered including:
- Abilities test – CogAT
- Achievement data – MSA, quarterly assessments
- Classroom performance/grades
- Teacher observation checklists
- Parent nominations/checklists
- Student needs will be identified.
- Student Needs Matched to Gifted Services
- Many
students will continue with gifted services already available in
schools.
- Additional gifted services may be available
based on the following timeline:
- 2008-2009 – Language arts/reading and math
- 2009-2010 – Science and social studies
- 2010-2011 – Arts and leadership
- Parent Notification
- Parent will be notified by mail of committee
recommendations.
- Letters will be mailed before the end of the
school year.
Any parent can nominate a child in grades 2-7 to be screened for gifted
services. Parent nomination forms are
available at every elementary and middle school. Forms must be returned to the gifted
education resource teacher at your child's school March 3 – 20, 2008.
