Gifted Education ServicesSummer Opportunities 2009Elementary Summer Enrichment ReadingThis year there will be opportunities for enrichment reading available through the Summer Success Academies held at various sites throughout the county. Students read a variety of texts and analyze literature through discussion, art, drama, technology and writing. Visits to the school media center to check out books are included.
Page TurnersPage Turners is a summer enrichment book club for middle school students in enrichment/gifted level language arts classes. Students select and read at least one novel each week and meet onfive evenings for high-level discussion. Registration forms are distributed through the schools in April.
Beyond the BooksThis year a daytime version of Page Turners will be available at the Summer Success Academies for middle school. Students will select and read novels for discussion groups and also participate in a technology project related to their reading. This book club/class will meet on six days during the Extended Year Program.
SAT/ACT Preparation ClassesHigh school students may take a five-day SAT/ACT Preparation class during the summer. This class will cover test format, types of questions and test-taking strategies. Registration forms will be available at this site and through the high schools in the spring.
Financial FitnessThis summer Charles County Public Schools will offer a two-week summer enrichment opportunity to students entering the 11th or 12th grade. Students will learn basic financial literacy skills needed to enter the workforce or continue their education as they leave high school. Students who cannot take a full-year financial literacy course during the regular school year are encouraged to take this two-week enrichment opportunity. Maryland Summer Centers for Gifted and Talented StudentsThe goal of the Maryland Summer Centers for Gifted and Talented Students is to "provide opportunities for Maryland's gifted and talented students to work with like-minded peers in an area of ability and interest." Sixteen centers around the state will offer experiences in fine and performing arts, science, engineering, mathematics, history and global languages.
