Opportunities for students

Charles County Public Schools sponsors many enrichment activities throughout the year for students of all ages. For information about joining a specific school team, please contact the school directly.

Fall/Winter Chess Tournaments -- Each year CCPS sponsors two chess tournaments for students in grades K-12. The winter 2010 chess tournament will be held on January 30 (download the flyer .) Chess clubs are also available at various elementary, middle and high schools. Contact the school for details.

It's Academic -- It's Academic is a county-wide high school competition held each year at the beginning of December. This year's competition was held on December 9, 2009 at the College of Southern Maryland.

Destination ImagiNation Competition -- Destination ImagiNation (DI) is a creative problem solving competition for students in grades K-12. Teams of up to seven members solve one of six different challenges to perform at tournaments. DI challenges promote teamwork through unique hands-on experiences in the sciences, technology, mechanics, engineering, theater, and humanities. The regional DI competition will be held on March 6, 2010 at La Plata High School. Contact your school for details on teams. More information on DI is available at www.marylanddi.org.

CTY Talent Search - Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth conducts an annual Talent Search in the fall to identify, assess, and recognize the academic abilities of highly able students. Students qualify for the Talent Search through standardized test scores. Services and opportunities available through the Talent Search can be found at the CTY Web site at www.cty.jhu.edu.

Scholars Course of Study - Students who demonstrate talent and interest in academic areas and work beyond grade level content may participate in the Scholars Course of Study. These students in grades 6-12 take advanced level courses and maintain specified grades. Information on the Scholars Course of Study is available through the brochure, gifted resource teacher, or high school guidance department. Download a brochure .

Additional Enrichment Opportunities -- Additional opportunities are available to students at all grade levels. Contact the school for details on specific clubs and competitions. Enrichment opportunities may include the following:

  • Elementary Math Challenge (grades 4-5)
  • Math Counts (grades 6-8)
  • Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement Competition - MESA (grades 3-12)
  • Spelling Bee (grades 6-8)
  • Geography Bee (grades 4-8)
  • History Day (grades 6-12)
  • Black Saga (grades 4-8)
  • Science Fair (grades 3-12)
  • Future Educators of America (grades 6-12)
  • Student Government (grades 6-12)
