The Foundation for Public School Children of Charles County

At the end of the school year, each child in Kindergarten, First and Second grade receives as a gift from members of the McGuffey's Club a my library book bag containing from six to ten books.  The books encourage students to read at home during the summer months - a critical period when new reading skills are easily lost.

Reading for pleasure at home is as important for a child's intellectual development as reading at school.

The especially designed my library book bag is a place where each child can collect more books with a sense of personal ownership and purpose; the book bag is a place where the habits of literacy may be practiced and retained.

Following are a few of the reasons that we believe the my library book bag program is important:

  • Teachers know that children learn more by reading books
  • Children who spend leisure time with books learn more and perform better in school than those who don't.
  • No other source of knowledge engages the human spirit as the reading of books.
  • Books entertain and build character.

You may help purchase 5,000 book bags containing over 35,000 books by joining the McGuffey's Club
