Student Service Learning
What is it?
Student Service Learning is an unpaid activity within the curriculum, school or community that provides a service to a non-profit organization or group to address school or community needs which must be approved by the school coordinator. Service Learning refers to a method of learning by performing service projects. It involves studying the community, identifying problems, developing solutions, implementing the solutions in the form of a service project, and reflecting on the impact of the service.
Student Service Learning is a graduation requirement and your student starts to earn their credits in middle school, in 6th 7th and 8th grade.
If you have any questions, contact the SSL Coordinator Mrs. M. Watson at 301-753-2082 or email mwatson@ccboe.com.
Letter to parents of 7th graders regarding SSL
October 21, 2008
Dear Parents/Guardians:
I wanted to take this opportunity to reintroduce the requirements for Student Service Learning credits.
Student Service Learning is a graduation requirement. Your 7th grader will be completing their credits through their Language Arts and Science class. After class discussion and investigating the subject of their project, they write a short paragraph describing the project, importance and how it affects their community. The 7th grade project for this year is a Food Drive. We will be collecting canned food from now until February. In February the students will sort, package and help carry to the truck the food items collected. This will be done in the students Science class. This is their "hands on "activity required for SSL. Once the project is completed the students will write a reflective paper on how they felt working on the project and how they feel it will help the community. 7th grade Language Arts teachers will then give me a list at the end of the school year to say that your student did or did not complete the activity and writing pieces.
It is important that your student finish this project to earn their 7th grade SSL credits. If they do not complete this project, when they go on to high school they will have to do an Individual Study Packet on their own which requires a lot of time. Please encourage your student(s) to do the work in middle school.
If you have any questions please email me at mwatson@ccboe.com or call your grade level guidance counselor and they can forward the information to me.
Sincerely,
Mrs. M. Watson SSL Coordinator Davis Middle School
Letter to parents of 8th graders regarding SSL
October 21, 2008
Dear Parents/Guardians:
I wanted to take this opportunity to reintroduce the Student Service Learning requirement for 8th grade.
8th grade students meet their credits by completing a project in their Health class. They will be discussing and researching subjects on substance abuse. They will complete a writing piece, then construct a project and do a reflective paper.
All the criteria are spelled out by their teacher. Once their Health class is completed the teacher will give to me a list of students who did or did not complete their SSL component.
If your 8th graders choose not to do the required work they go on to high school without their 8th grade credits for SSL. If this happens then your 8th grader will have to do an Individual Study Packet on their own. This packet is very large and time consuming and requires a lot of the students own time to complete. Doing the required work in Health class is the way to go. Please encourage your student to do the work.
Any questions please email me at mwatson@ccboe.com or call your grade level guidance counselor and they will forward anything to me. Thanks for your help and support.
Sincerely,
Mrs. M. Watson SSL Coordinator Davis Middle School
