Theodore G. Davis Middle School

Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS)

What is PBIS?
  • A school-based intervention for reducing disruptive and aggressive behaviors.
  • Helps to create a better climate for the entire school
  • A way to have more positive interactions with students.
  • Team based analysis of school behavior data

PBIS is a growing initiative throughout Maryland and the rest of the country. See Maryland's PBIS website for more information: http://www.pbismaryland.org/

What does PBIS look like at Theodore G. Davis Middle School?

SOAAR Poster

Students are taught the expectations of Safety Organization Achievement Responsibility and Respect. They are taught what it means to show S.O.A.R.R. behaviors in all school environments. The S.O.A.R.R. Matrix and other posters are displayed throughout the school as reminders.

Students earn Davis Dollars for showing appropriate school behaviors. All staff can give them to any student they witness displaying S.O.A.R.R. behaviors. It encourages staff to catch students being good and recognize them for it, which promotes a positive school environment. Earning a Davis Dollar, and the recognition and praise that accompanies it, makes students more likely to display the positive behaviors in the future.

Students can then redeem their Davis Dollars at a monthly store during lunch periods ("S.O.A.R.R. Store") or for other drawings and activities throughout the school year. Staff are also reinforced for distributing Davis Dollars. Students who "S.O.A.R.R." are also given the opportunity to participate in exciting quarterly events!
