Book Checkout

The media center is filled with books for all different levels of readers including picture books, chapter books, and a wide selection of non-fiction books. Students may check out 1 to 3 books depending on their grade level and special projects. Books are checked our for a 2 week time period and can be renewed if additional time is needed to finish reading the book. Parents remember you are welcome to come in any time between 8:30am and 4:00pm to check out additional books for your children. For suggestions on reading material, check out the web sites below or ask Mrs. Burger, Mrs. Aldridge, Mrs. McGeehan, or your child's teacher.

Accelerated Reader

We are very lucky to have the Accelerated Reader program at Barnhart. This program enables students to select books that match their reading level and interest preference. As they read and when they finish the book, they talk with their teacher about their reading and then take a computer based Reading Practice Quiz.

To choose a book on their reading level, students need to know their ZPD's, their Zone of Proximal Development. The STAR Reading Assessment taken by the students designates the range of book levels that a student can read comfortably. The Accelerated Reader books in the Barnhart library are all marked with a spine label that identifies their level. About 75% of the media center books are part of the Accelerated Reader program! For more information about the Accelerated Reader program, please contact your classroom teacher or Mrs. Burger, our media specialist.

Research

The media center is always available for support when it comes to research. Please stop by for assistance with Science Fair or Monthly Book Reports. Students are also learning how to locate books through the computerized system called Destiny when they check out books in the media center.

CPBS News

Each morning students and staff of C. Paul Barnhart tune in to watch the student run CPBS News program. This daily program is televised throughout the school and highlights the world's current events, sports, weathers, character education traits and school announcements.
